Opened in 1963 with the sole purpose of transporting one of the country’s many natural resources and its primary export, iron ore, the single train line extends 704 kilometers through the Sahara desert from Zouerat to the port of Nouadhibou. – 19.11.2018. Between 1961 and 1963, the mining company “Société Anonyme des Mines de Fer de la Mauritanie” built a 652km long standard gauge line from the Atlantic port of Nouadhibou to the iron ore mines in Zouérate.
The Mauritania Railway: Backbone of the Sahara represents the proposed first installment of “Colliding Worlds,” a new series which explores some of the world’s most remote, harsh, and breathtaking environments, where traditional lifestyles collide with the modern world. Three quarters of Mauritania lies under the Sahara Desert. It’s an endless sea of powdery sand, towering dunes and nothingness – not the ideal place to get lost. But, there is an iron ore railway line (nicknamed the Backbone of the Sahara) and a “track” that follows it east for 200 miles. The Mauritania Railway is the pilot for Colliding Worlds, a new, eight-chapter series that we’re producing and for which we’re seeking financing. Our goal for this series is to find the beauty in some of the most remote, harsh — some would even say ugly — places on the earth.
